GERMAN JACK O LANTERNS On a recent trip to Germany, we uncovered some documentation that gives us some more information about these pumpkins which allows us to better date these items. A catalog from the maker of these items was uncovered that shows hand drawn pictures of the various candle holding pumpkins that they made. Picture 1 shows the front cover of the catalog and says Masks, Paper hats and Carnival Items. Picture 2 shows the different sizes and types of lanterns that the company made. Picture 3 is titled Pumpkin Lantern, punched from pasteboard an assortment and shows the gross price and measurements of the different types of lanterns that were made. Although the catalog did not have a date, these items are probably from the 1930's. One clue is that the price of the items is in R.M., which was a Reichsmark, or the currency that was in circulation in Germany from 1924 to 1948. After 1948 Germany went to the Deutsch Mark. Also since they are stamped Germany, it would probably mean they were from before the war. Picture 4 shows the various types of pumpkins that were made. These were samples or prototypes. Each lantern has an original tag attached to it. This tag has the stock number which matches the same item in the catalog.
